How to Embed and Resize a YouTube Video in a Post

YouTube makes it easy to share videos in your posts, but resizing them to make them fit well isn’t as straightforward.

Here’s a brief rundown of sharing, linking, embedding and resizing.

Can’t see the video? Watch it here.

Video Notes:

  1. Click the “Share” link on the video page.
  2. Grab the highlighted code for text links.
  3. Click “Embed” and grab the code into the HTML tab of your blog. (The video won’t show up until the post is published so don’t worry when you see the orange box.)
  4. If you need to resize the video, scroll down a bit and put in the width you’d like the video to be. Copy and paste the updated code in the box and paste into the HTML tab.

    Hi Amy,
I just did my first youtube video and embedded a video in my sidebar. WHat I notice is that it starts out at the lowest quality, so when someone pulls it to full screen it’s hideous. I presume a lot of people wont know that you can change that in the settings at the bottom of the viewer. Is there a way to have the small sidebar viewer start out permanently at least the 480p? On mine it resets automatically to 144p. Thanks for any suggestions. I reference your blog for all my questions first before even google!

Amy, is it possible to center a youtube video? I don’t want to make mine large enough to fill the entire width of my blog’s content area, but I’d like it to be centered. Every time I try to center it, it keeps going back to the left. Not a huge deal, but it matters to me. :-)

It’s ironic that in a post about videos resizing, yor videos don’t resize correctly. :-)

Have you looked at this post on an iPhone ? The video isn’t resizing correctly.

Hi, Amy! You are my hero! I’ve been struggling for about 2 hours trying to add a video to our blog reading “WordPress for Dummies” and applying the instructions, reading WP plugin instructions and attempting to apply them to the post and NOTHING worked! So, I decided to check our “what would Amy do?” and sure enough, your clear, concise instructions made it happen! Thanks from the bottom of my heart and Merry Christmas!

Hi, Amy! Thanks so much for the tip. I am interested in making a small video to share on my site, but was wondering what software you use to record your videos…? I’m not even sure where to start. so any help is appreciated. Thanks so much!

Thanks Amy! I was posting the embed code into the visual tab instead of HTML. Oops! Thanks a bunch!

Thank you for bringing my attention to adjusting the width of videos!

I don’t write my content in WordPress but instead use Windows Live Writer and publish from there. There’s a plug in I found in that software separate from the “Insert video” tab that makes it easier and customizable but I’d never looked before to see my videos were spanning all the way across or not. It looks so much cleaner when there isn’t a disproportionate gap to the right.

Thank you for sharing this lil ole ninja tip with me!

Duh! *smackshead I was trying to upload videos straight from my computer and was getting really frustrated and quit. For whatever reason using YouTube never crossed my mind.
    Thanks Amy
